Kindergarten Update

What a wonderful group of kinders!

Kindergarten Update
Reading
We have introduced all the letters of the alphabet, but focus on one letter a week to become experts!
As  Bb  Cc  Ff  Mm  Nn Pp Ss Tt

We have also learned the diagraphs:
th, sh  ch ph, wh, qu

This week we will focus on word families.  Today we focused on brainstorming all the words that end with the letters at.  The students are showing so much growth!!
In addition to learning letter names and sounds we have focused on word reading.  Our reading program has introduced several words and I have included several more to help with our writing program.

Writing
We are becoming wonderful writers.  Our unit of study is Narrative writing.  We continue to practice sounding out words to spell words, start each sentence with a capital letter, leave spaces between words, and using a punctuation mark at the end of the sentence.
WOW!  It is amazing to watch the students begin to write.

Math
This unit of math has focused on addition to 10.
We also count to 100 daily.  Please practice at home if your child is still unable to count to 100.
Introduced place value with teen numbere.
Ongoing is the review of 2D and 3D shapes.

The Ridgeview Read-A-Thon is just around the corner!

Ridgeview's Read-A-Thon runs through the month of February.  During this time, students will use reading logs to keep track of the minutes they read or are being read to by a parent.  Weekly drawings will be held, prizes will be awarded for students efforts.  This event sponsored by the PTO.  I will be sending more information soon!

Snow Day!

Happy Snow:)

Wow!  What crazy weather...  I love the snow, but I think I've had enough for awhile:)
Reading:
We will continue to meet daily during whole reading group and small reading group instruction.  Please continue to read at home and record the books on the January reading log.  The daily reading in school as well as home is the key to reading success.  Each student will be assessed at the end of the month using the EasyCBM reading measure.
Math
We started Unit 3 in math.  This unit we will work on number partners-addition and subtraction to 10 and place value.   We will also be continuing to work on our teen numbers.
Writing
We have completed our Informative Writing Unit and we are beginning to move onto Narrative writing.  We are focusing on starting a sentence with a capital letter, using spaces between words, and a punctuation mark at the end.  Please encourage your child to use their "guess and go" spelling.
Science
We are continuing to study aquaponics.  Aquaponics is the science of raising vegetables and fish in a closed recirculating system.  The fish waste provides nutrients to the plants and the plants provide clean water for the fish.  We are getting ready to grow cilantro and basil.
We grew lettuce the first quarter and fed Rm 12's class bunny the lettuce.
